Repairs, Security of Internal Jobs

Inventory and Estate Departments

Whenever merchandise is transferred between any parts of the company, normal security procedures must be followed.

  • A batch of gold jewelry is sent from Inventory through Repair for polish. A record of some type MUST be made as to how many pieces and how much it weighs.
  • A batch of watches is sent to Repair to have the batteries changed: Minimally a count of the number of watches is made, but better is a list of the watches by name.
  • The Estate Buying section sends through Repair a large parcel to have the stones pulled. Because there may be many small items a count may not be necessary but a total weight can be recorded and when the stones and jewelry come back BOTH can be weighed and should add up to the total weight of the original parcel. If there is a discrepancy then you know some stones were not returned or some gold is missing.

The purpose of this policy is not to state that our Repair Department employees are going to steal, but that NORMAL security must be taken at all times. Inventory may misplace a piece or, heaven forbid, a jeweler noticing that the bag has NO weight on it, keeps a few pieces. It has happened before!

So always weigh or count when sending through large parcels, but weight is more accurate and faster if the quantity is large.

Repair Department

On the flip side, the Repair Department should not accept parcels without an identifying list being made. Demand a count or a weight before you accept it.

Summary

Always use some form of security to assure that you get back what you sent. Never just send an uncounted or un-weighted parcel through Repair.
