Many times employees are faced with making a decision. 99% of what we do here at Leo Hamel’s is covered in policy and the decision is already made as to how things are to be handled. The only real response to a question as to what should be done or how something should be done is “What does the policy state?” The policy is available and it is your responsibility to know it. If you need help on finding the applicable policy, Division 5-The Qualifications Division (“Qual”) can help you.
When you find something that isn’t covered make it known by writing it up to Qual who will check to make sure it isn’t already covered, and if not get a new policy written.
Making a profit (by the way 38% gross profit is break-even) is the underlying reason for doing anything we do here. Why does someone pick-up the trash out front every morning? Because it will look nice isn’t the complete answer. Because it will look nice and make customers more comfortable coming here to spend money on things we sell for a profit, is more complete. The key is we pick up trash to make a profit. Our newsletter is a waste of money if it just looks pretty. It need only look good enough to cause people to come in or call in and buy something we sell at a profit.
Why would treasury hurry to get change for a salesperson and be more than willing to help them get an invoice correct? Because its good manners? Hell no! Because anything that helps the sales people get more things sold for a profit is what all of us should be concerned about. That treasury does it all with a smile, helps the salesperson feel better and more willing to sell more things for a profit rather than have attention on “bothering Treasury.” Get the idea?
Why does inventory help the salesperson with trades? Why do we keep the fingerprints cleaned off of the glass cases? Why do we dress nicely? Why do we pick up & keep things orderly? To make a profit! If we could make more profit picking our noses and yelling at each other then that would be the policy as our Senior policy is to make a profit. Why do we sometimes give refunds and our policy is to give only store credits. Well by now the answer should be obvious; if giving a refund will result in us making more profit then it is sometimes done.
If you were to look at everything you do here, everything and ask yourself, “Does this make a profit?” you could easily A.) Have a real purpose for everything you do, and B.) Stop doing those things that don’t lead to a profit or actually cause less profit and C.) More easily answer your own questions of “What should I do in this case?”
