Safe Handling of Gold Testing Acids

Buyers are required to use testing acids while performing their jobs. It is important that these acids be used safely and effectively, and that each buyer understands how to handle any accidents which may occur.

A few facts:

  1. The testing acids contain two acids: Nitric and Hydrochloric. Both are present in quantities far below OHSA’s recommended usage.
  2. These acids are 100% water soluble, which means that they will completely break down when exposed to water.
  3. They are nonflammable.

Handling spills

Dilute the spill with water, and neutralize the area with baking soda. We use the acids in such small amounts; there shouldn’t be any significant spillage.

For eye contact

Wash with water for 20-30 minutes and seek medical attention.

For skin contact

Immediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes and remove any contaminated clothing.

If inhaled in large amounts

Immediately move into fresh air.

Additionally, the following materials will be available at all of our buy offices should any buyer wish to use them:

  • Safety goggles
  • Acid resistant rubber gloves
  • Vinyl apron
  • Baking soda
  • Copy of the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

Disposal of used paper towels containing acid – there are no specific requirements for disposal. Continue to dispose of waste in the trash can.

Always keep the acids stored in an area away from excessive heat and moisture.
