No One Behind the Counter Who Doesn’t Work Here

For the security of our assets, no one is allowed behind the counters or in the back offices who doesn’t currently work here. This applies whether we are open or closed, and whether or not the merchandise is locked up in the safes as there are always valuables that are not put in the safes at night.

This includes spouses, friends, relatives, and former employees. There is no reason for former employees to be given free rein to wander around behind the counters and in the back offices. They are no longer employed here and so do not have any allegiance to the company. (The CEO, COO, CFO, or Vice President can make exceptions to this rule as they see fit but will be personally responsible for any consequences.)

It isn’t that none of these people can be trusted. Some can and some can’t. But it’s difficult enough to keep track of things around here with just the people who work here behind the counters. Things get moved or seem to disappear, and it’s best if there is no question that someone who was here visiting might have moved them.

Though we understand that you might be proud of where you work and want to give friends or relatives a tour, because of the above it is not a good idea. Imagine if something came up missing on the day that you gave your friend or family member a tour.

Exceptions

  • When someone is hired to repair or install equipment, these repairmen must be continually supervised while they are behind the counter, especially in areas where merchandise is left out on counters or desks.
  • Jewelry/watch reps that come to do shows usually bring merchandise that belongs to the watch company, not the rep; they should be monitored because we may be liable if anything turns up missing.
  • Miscellaneous jewelry or watch reps shown to the Inventory Buyer should be taken to the conference room and accompanied if they need to go anywhere else in the store or come behind the counters.
  • Michel Mottale, Thom Underwood, Nam Van Do, Luke Hamel, and Elan Nachassi (HOD) are independent contractors with whom we do continuous business and are exceptions to the rule; they do not have to be supervised continually while they walk around in the back offices.
  • Cleaning services must be supervised at all times while behind the counters, but they are licensed and bonded against theft.
  • Children of employees are an exception (but not friends of the children unless cleared by the CEO, COO, CFO, or Vice President); children should be supervised or placed in a room away from merchandise. See LHC PL 29 May 2002 “Children in the Store.”
  • The President, Vice President, COO, or CFO may bring other people to their offices or give VIP tours but are responsible for supervising them and for any consequences; they are the only ones authorized to grant exceptions.
