As you know, our company computer system recently got hacked. How it got hacked was that one of us clicked on a link in an email. That link downloaded spy software onto that computer, then it got into the entire network. It has costs us many thousands of dollars and hours to remove the spyware and get our system repaired. All because someone clicked on a link in an email.
Do not trust any links unless you know the person who sent it, and even then, contact that person and verify that they sent it before you click on it. Your customers’ computers can get hacked too and send out virus emails.
The email might even look like it came from someone we know, like the one that was supposedly from Bill Hammett, but was actually a fraudulent phishing email. If you get an email with a link that looks like it’s about insurance, verify with HR before you click on it. If you get an email with a link that looks like it’s about payroll, verify with Accounting before you click on it.
Often if you look at the actual email that it came from (and not the apparent name), you can see that it didn’t come from the actual person. For example, it might show Bill Hammett’s name, but the email address that shows is not bill@hammetthealth.com but cybercrook@gmail.com.
