New watches and jewelry can quickly become “used” or shopworn through careless handling during showing, and ESPECIALLY while setting up and putting them away.
It is a very strict rule to be extremely careful when setting up and putting new watches and jewelry away at night. All new watches will be stored in a box or wrapped carefully EACH night.
A tiny mishandling today adds a tiny scratch to a watch, 3 days from now perhaps another tiny scratch, and after 6 months of tiny scratches you have a “used” watch.
Therefore:
Be careful with the boxes of items when putting them into the safe. Don’t cram them into the safe boxes when putting them away at night. Don’t bang them together or put things next to them that will scratch them. Watch boxes are nailed together and after some time the nails become exposed and can scratch the cases as well as other jewelry. This should be looked checked.
Also when you are putting watches with straps in the display case, do not put the strap through the buckle and fasten it closed. Instead, put the strap end through the back loop of the strap to prevent wear on the hole.
Over a period of time the strap will still look like new and not have one of the holes larger than the others, or crease in the leather. This will ensure that the new watch looks new, not “used”.
Bear in mind, new or refinished watches in repair envelopes also need to be wrapped so that the bracelets do not flop around and scratch the watches.
Valuable items should not be left lying around unprotected in communication baskets or on counter tops where they can be damaged.
All the above and more have happened and could have been prevented with a little care taken by each of us continually.
